Located just 15 minutes north of Dunsborough, the lighthouse was constructed using the limestone quarried from the nearby areas. You can take some memorable photos from the viewing platform, with panoramic views of the ocean and Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park. With an expert guide by your side, you can hear stories of shipwrecks off the coastline, as well as the hardships faced by the lighthouse keepers over the years. You will learn about the functions of the lighthouse, and also about the local ocean currents that are used by humpback whales for their migration. Jewel Cave is one of the most naturally decorated caves in Australia and contains numerous examples of helictites, cave corals, stalagmites, and pendulites. The highlights of the cave’s natural formations include the enormous stalagmite, known as ‘The Karri Forest’, and flowstones such as the Organ Pipes and The Frozen Waterfall. The cave is home to three chambers, with the Lake Chamber offering some of the most diverse cave formations. You can see several crystal formations, cave corals, helictites, and some incredibly rare pendulites, which are pendulum-like structures formed from stalagmites. The cave is also home to the fossilized remains of numerous Tasmanian Tigers, also known as Thylacines. Opened in 1895, Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse was constructed using local limestone by M. C. Davies’s company. Standing at 57 meters in height, it holds the distinction of being the tallest lighthouse on mainland Australia, and is located at the most south-westerly point of the continent. The lighthouse oversees the meeting point of the Indian and Southern Oceans, and continues to operate to this day. One of the highlights in the area is the Interpretive Center, which is housed in one of the original lighthouse keepers’ cottages. Here, you can delve into the lives and history of the various lighthouse keepers over the years. Between May and September, the lighthouse is also one of the best vantage points for spotting whales in the ocean. At the end of your tour, you can visit the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse Cafe to enjoy some light refreshments or delicious coffee.
